NAB 2008: Pro camcorder highlights

Sony's new PMW-EX3

Sony's new PMW-EX3

(Credit: Sony)

Each year the National Association of Broadcasters holds its trade show in Las Vegas and manufacturers trot out their latest professional camcorders. Here are the highlights from this year's show, so far...

Canon XL H1S/XL H1A: Canon checks in with an update to its HDV XL H1. The two new models each include three 1.67-megapixel 16:9 1/3-inch CCD sensors, 20x optical zoom lenses with Canon's SuperRange optical image stabilization, and more granular controls. For instance, the iris is now adjustable in 1/16-stop increments instead of 1/4-stop, and gain, white balance, selective-color noise reduction, and global color controls all have finer adjustments over the XL H1. The difference between the two models comes down to HD SDI, Genlock, and SMPTE timecode support. The $8,999 XL H1S has them, while the $5,999 XL H1A does not. Expect the H1S in June and the H1A in July.

JVC GY-HD200UB: This is really an update to JVC's $5,995 GY-HD200 pro camcorder. The main difference is that the HD200UB adds real-time output for 1080/60i and 1080/50i signals through the camcorder's FireWire port, so you can pair it with an optional JVC hard drive to record 1080i video with this model instead of just 720p. Existing GY-HD200 owners can send their camcorders in to the factory to be upgraded if they purchased the camcorder after February 1, 2008.

Panasonic AG-HPX170: This new pro camcorder offers three 16:9 1/3-inch CCD sensors, 14-bit A/D conversion, 19-bit processing, a 13x optical zoom lens with a wide 28mm-equivalent at its widest setting, and can record at up to 1080i or 720p in the DVCProHD format, as well as a number of other HD and SD formats. The kicker is that this camcorder records to solid-state memory in the form of Panasonic's P2 cards, which are available at the 32GB size right now for up to 64 minutes of recording, though 64GB P2 cards will hit this fall and offer double the recording time. The ZG-HPX170 will be available this fall, though pricing has not yet been announced.
Panasonic AG-HMC150/AG-HMC70: These two camcorders were originally announced back in February, though at that time Panasonic hadn't announced pricing for the AG-HMC150. According to news coming out of Vegas, Panasonic has set the price of the ZG-HMC150 at $4,500--that's about $1,500 cheaper than Lori Grunin's estimate back in February. Looks like I lost the office pool.

Sony PMW-EX3: This follow-up to the PMW-EX1 adds the ability to change lenses and can record up to 1920x1080 HD onto Sony's SxS memory cards, which are very similar to Panasonic's P2 cards, though Sony was only able to show a prototype 32GB card, while Panasonic is was teasing 64GB cards at the show. The PMW-EX3 includes Genlock and SMPTE timecode support. The PMW-EX3 will be available this fall for about $13,000.

Red Scarlet: According to a report on Camcorderinfo.com, Red Digital Cinema was teasing its latest HD model, which will include a 2/3-inch mysterium X sensor, 1-to-120fps (or 180fps burst) recording, a 4.8-inch LCD, and an 8x optical zoom lens. It has full auto or full manual shooting modes, as well as HDMI, HD-SDI, FireWire800, and USB2 outputs. It is expected to cost $3,000, though the company is saying that it won't be available until 2009 and states very bluntly on its Web site that specs, delivery dates and design are all subject to change. Indeed, the company's original Red One camcorder went through a number of revisions from the time it was announced until it finally became available.

Record high-definition video with $499 Canon HV10 camcorder

(Credit: CNET)

I've mentioned before my love--no, lurve--for high-def camcorders. Here's your chance to grab one for just about the lowest price I've seen: Vanns.com and WilloughBys are both offering the Canon HV10 for $499 shipped. (Actually, it's $499.98 at Vanns, so budget accordingly.) These are factory-refurbished units that include a manufacturer's warranty (though neither site specifies the duration; I'd ask before ordering).

The tape-based Canon HV10 captures full 1080i video and 2.7-megapixel still photos. It's chock full of advanced features, including optical image stabilization, a 10x optical zoom, and lots of manual controls. CNET didn't like the camcorder's ergonomics or short battery life, and I'm bummed that it lacks an HDMI output for connecting directly to your HDTV.

Nevertheless, the HV10 captures absolutely dazzling video for a price that's hard to beat. Before soccer season ends and you miss your chance to record your little superstar in full HD glory, jump on this deal.

CNET's camera and camcorder review status report

Just posted: Nikon Coolpix S600 review.

I'm not too proud to steal a good idea, in this case Katz's most excellent CNET's HDTV review status report. I, too, get besieged by e-mails asking when we're planning to review camera x, why haven't we yet reviewed camcorder y, as well as escalatingly irritated e-mails as to why I failed to respond to a reader's previous e-mails regarding the previous two questions. And since today is Phil Ryan's last day with us, I, too, have just become a lone reviewer staring down an onrushing tide of the almost 200 new products in my categories announced since the beginning of the year (not to mention the 30 or so announcements I expect over the course of the next few months). Toss in the review videos, blogging, weekly newsletter, and podcast, as well as crappy weather that can delay field testing, and, well, not as many reviews will get posted as we'd like. Thankfully, I still have Matt Fitzgerald trapped in our camera-testing lab to do the heavy lifting of target shooting and analysis, and have recently gotten the go-ahead to start freelancing out some reviews again.

So here's what we've got imminently on deck--reviews you should expect to see over the next few weeks (in no particular order):

And here's the top of the list of the 30 or so products we've got on hand awaiting their turn in the lab over the following weeks. Some popular products that should be on the list aren't yet, but I won't bother you with my product acquisition woes. (FYI, I prioritize reviews based on internal traffic metrics that have shown to be satisfactorily representative of which products people are interested in. So bombarding me with e-mails requesting that I move something up in the queue will not persuade me differently. Unless you're my boss. Or his boss.)

  • Nikon Coolpix S210

  • Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ5

  • Canon PowerShot SD790 IS

  • JVC Everio GZ-MG330

  • Canon FS100

  • Canon FS11

  • Canon PowerShot A580

If you don't see your potential favorite here, that doesn't necessarily mean it won't be reviewed within the next couple of months--it just means I don't want to get your hopes up. Hopefully, we'll fill Phil's job soon (though no one can really replace him) so that the reviews machine can grind a bit more quickly.

New RCA Small Wonder video cams now available

The EZ210

(Credit: RCA)

The latest iteration of RCA's Small Wonder video cameras is now available. Along with Creative's just-released $99 Vado, the new trio of Small Wonders is competing with Flip Video's popular budget cams, which--by some estimates--have snagged up to one-eighth of the overall camcorder market.

We liked how previous Small Wonder models had a flip-out LCD, and we're happy to report that two of the new models sport this feature. It's also worth noting that all the models have some form of removable memory, which means you can always carry around an extra card with you to store more videos. Alas, RCA hasn't gone with a rechargeable battery--but the new models are pretty affordable. Two come in at less than $100, while the splash-resistant Traveler model comes in at $149.99.

There was some talk at CES about the EZ300HD, a Small Wonder that would allegedly shoot at "HD" resolution (1,280 x 720). However, that model hasn't materialized yet.

HDD camcorders: More storage equals more opportunity to lose precious memories

Earlier in the week we posted a review of the JVC Everio GZ-MG330, a good, basic compact camcorder with a 30GB hard disk drive (HDD) for recording anywhere from around 7 hours to nearly 40 hours of digital video, depending on quality mode. We're also currently testing the Sony Handycam DCR-SR45 that similarly offers copious recording times on a 30GB hard drive (check Crave on Monday for a testing update). Both models also come in step-up versions with 60GB capacities. More storage space, especially in the case of fixed-media camcorders, is great since it means longer recording times.

However, all this extra room means less reason for you to offload your footage--or in this case byte-age--between shooting sessions. This got us thinking: should manufacturers of HDD camcorders (or flash-based ones, too, for that matter) build in a warning to users about the growing amount of video stored on their camcorders?

Mobile devices, by nature, are easy to walk off with and are subject to all manner of abuse, which translates into a greater risk of losing any recordings that remain on the camcorder. With larger and larger drives being used, it's easy to see an average consumer not stopping to connect to a computer until they absolutely have to. What if makers put a simple warning after every 5GB of space used just to say, "Hey, you may want to transfer your video to your PC soon?" Or do it after a month of activity or inactivity with a Clippy-esque, "I've noticed you have a lot of video stored on the hard drive. What would you like to do with it?" It's a simple fix that could prevent a lot of heartache. Then again, it'll probably just get ignored like countless other pop-up warnings.

Sony intros flash-based HD camcorder

Sony Handycam HDR-CX12

Sony Handycam HDR-CX12

(Credit: Sony Electronics)

As it inevitably had to do, Sony today announced the flash-memory version of its HDR-SR11 hard-disk-based HD camcorder, replacing the older CX7. A tad smaller than the CX7 by one or two tenths of an inch in every dimension, it uses the same 12x zoom lens and 5.6-megapixel ClearVid CMOS sensor that drives the SR11 (and its line mates, the SR10 and SR12). Since it's smaller than the SR models, it uses the same 2.7-inch LCD as its predecessor.

Going head-to-head with Canon's HF10, the HF10 still looks like a slightly better deal based on specs alone. It's very similar--both are SD-based models which produce 1920x1080 AVCHD video from approximately 1/3-inch sensors, though the HF10's is lower 3.3-megapixel resolution, and sport 12x zoom lenses. But for the same $900 Sony plans to charge for the CX12, Canon includes 16GB built-in memory for the HF10 while Sony plans to bundle a smaller 4GB Memory Stick Duo Pro Mark2. The actual street price may be cheaper, of course.

According to Sony, the CX12 will be able to record 25 minutes of highest-quality HD video (16 megabits per second) on the 4GB card. Unfortunately, it will still come with the inadequate (and horribly named) Picture Motion Browser software rather than a real video-editing application, like Sony's own Vegas Video Movie Studio. You can have a party trying to find your own real editing application for the AVCHD files.

Though it doesn't sound like there's much new in its video capabilities, Sony has added its Smile Shutter technology, which pauses shooting until it detects the appropriate rictus, and child- and adult-prioritization from its Cyber-shot models, to the camcorder's still photo features.

Sony expects to start preorders on June 20 and to ship the camcorder in the beginning of August for $900।

Kodak finds its inner YouTube

The Zi6 comes in black and pink

The Zi6 comes in black and pink.

(Credit: Kodak)

Until under-thirtysomethings outgrow them, direct-to-YouTube camcorders will continue to flourish. And everyone wants a piece of the pie that was pretty much baked by Flip Video, with products like its latest Mino. Some efforts seem rather cynical and halfhearted like Samsung's recent attempt to remarket an old design into a market ruled by a different aesthetic. Others, like Kodak's just-announced Zi6, seem promising. But Kodak also misses the point in a few ways.On one hand, there are a couple of ways in which veteran Kodak outclasses its younger competitors: 720p HD video compared with the typical 640x480-pixel VGA resolution and a 2.4-inch LCD. A nice touch, which shows its heritage, is a switch that toggles between standard and macro focus distances. As seems to define this product category, it has a built-in, flip-out USB connector. Cleverly, the button for the connector also serves as a tiny mirror for shooting yourself in the face. It also accepts SD cards, but that's to supplement its paltry 128MB of storage--only 30MB of which is available for video. I tried it, and that was 36 seconds. It might as well have no internal memory at all. Extrapolating--Kodak has not published any capacity information--that's about 50MB per minute, or 41 minutes of video on a typical 2GB card. Which is optional.
While most models are getting smaller, the Zi6 is relatively huge--approximately the size of the clunky RCA Small Wonder. The size is predictably necessary to accommodate the 1/4.5-inch 1.6-megapixel sensor and large LCD. But the Zi6 also runs off two AA batteries. Though they're rechargeable, and Kodak provides a charger, most camcorders like this charge off the USB connection while downloading.Kodak plans to charge $179.95 for the Zi6 when it ships in September, and you'll have to tack on at least another $20 for a 2GB card, which brings the price up to $200. People buy these camcorders because they're cute, cheap and easy. They don't seem to care about the poor video quality, so I doubt they'll pay a premium for HD--and I haven't seen the video yet, so it could very well be poor HD. (We'll have a review soon.) And it doesn't do Mac, does the Mac incompletely--the whole direct-to-YouTube upload capability operates through Windows-only software--making it not-so-easy for lots of people in its target market. Furthermore, the extra cost of the card puts it in competition with a whole other class of products, such as the Aiptek Go-HD, which offer features like zoom lenses. It'll be quite interesting to see how the market responds to the Zi6.

Nothing (Ultramobile) new at the Intel stand

It seems that the nearer we get to the aunch of Atom-based devices, the less we see. At the Intel stand there’s only the LG (looking very nice in the flesh) the EB prototpe and the Inventec and Quanta prototypes.

Intel mobility meeting

IMG_6171I’ve just come out of the Intel Mobility meeting where Pankaj Kedia outlined the latest status of Menlow (now Atom) and the future Moorestown platform. Much of the presentation contained information we’ve seen before but there were one or two interesting points made.

  • For a device to be a Centrino Atom device, it will need to have a screen of 6″ or smaller with a total diagonal dimension of 7.5″ The thickness needs to be 1.2″ or smaller.
  • There are no minimum specifications for battery life.
  • In most usage scenarios, comapred to Stealey-based devices, the power drain will be half. Thinking off the top of my head, that means browsing at 5W and playing a video at about the same drain. Considering that the battery sizes will be half of those we see in a lot of devices, the in-use battery life will be about the same. Don’t expect 4 hours battery life on these MIDs. 2-3 will be more like the norm although i’ll be happy to be proved wrong on that one.
  • There will be 25-30 devices launched in 2008. In the summer we should expect to see many of the devices we have seen before. Gigabyte, Aigo, LG, Toshiba, Digifriends, EB.
  • The Intel ecosystem is growing.

There seems to be a gap in the marketing though and its the pro-moile user. Atom goes up to 1.8Ghz but even this might not be enough for the pro user. Based on what I’ve seen and heard, Menlow at 1.8Ghz matches 1Ghz CPUs of three years ago so for the pro mobile market, it looks like we’ll have to rely on manufacturers designing around the ULV laptop platforms. Samsung and Sony have proved that this can be done. It won’t be cheap, but it will be possible. I’ve posted a gallery of images from the presentation and included images of a few of the MIDS। After the meeting I got a very brief hands-on with the LG MID. It feels very nice and the slider mechanism is assisted, strong and smooth. Keyboard layout seems to mimic the OQO and even the feel of the keys is somewhat like the OQO. That’s not a bad thing at all. There’s an SD slot too which is something I always like to see. The LG wasn’t running so wasnt able to get into any perfromance testing but hopefuly i’ll get some hands-on with that this afternoon when we (JKK and I) meet Intel for a one-to-one.

Intel Atom, Clevo and the 7-hour UMPC. Hands-on.

clevo1 Here’s a fantastic demonstration of how energy-efficient a system designed around an Intel Atom processor can be and it’s one of the first demonstrations I’ve seen that really highlights what an Atom processor could bring to a pro-mobility build.

Clevo, who you might have seen in some UMPC and mini-notebook related CeBIT reports, have designed a 7″ convertible mini-laptop that they are showing off at CeBIT. They’re looking for a customer to sell and market the design and based on what I saw at CeBIT, I’d say it won’t be hard to find one because this SH8 look-alike has some very nice features indeed; 1.6Ghz Atom processor, external PCI-express slot, fingerprint reader, scroll-wheel, internal PCI-express slot (presumably the new Intel mini-mini PCI-express format) a 1024×600 touchscreen and a standard battery that will power this baby for up to 7 hours according to Clevo.

2008年7月20日星期日

Intel weren’t lying. The Sub 4W PC is here.

At CeBIT 2007, Intel revealed their ‘Menlow’ plans and told a room full of reporters that we’d be seeing sub 4W PCs in 2008। In March 2008 I asked Intel if they were on target and they told me that I’d be surprised। I am!
I’m lucky enough to be testing a Menlow-based Gigabyte M528 (sample) this weekend and this evening I’ve been doing a battery life test. I’m listening to MP3’s streaming over Wifi through a java applet on the Firefox 3-based browser with the CPU averaging about 30% utilisation (yes, this java app isn’t the most efficient at playing MP3’s!) It’s been going for over 2.5hours on its 10wh battery. (backlight off)
For those that don’t know, the Gigabyte M528 is one of the first MIDs and it’s based on Intel’s Menlow platform; A PC platform. This baby can run Windows XP!
The test is still going. Check back to see how long the test goes for….
Updates:
I’ve just passed the 3hrs mark. I hope the battery dies soon as its 00:20 here and I need to go to bed!!
It’s 12:30 now. 3hrs 10 mins…still going…
I estimate that with no backlight, the device is running about 0.5W less than with the screen backlight on at 50%. When the test finishes I can estimate a backlight-on time.
3hrs 20 mins. That’s an average drain of 3W. Its getting into smartphone territory at this point.
3hrs 30 mins….
Battery light flashing at 3hrs 35 mins… not long to go now.
And there she goes. Test completed at 3hrs 35 mins.
Average battery drain (assuming the battery really is empty now.) 2.8W
I estimate that with the screen on, it would be about 3.3W which would give a run time of 3hrs.
Well done Intel! I’m off to bed now।

Qualcomm Shows two PMPs, will Never Release Them

The Fairbanks is a PMP with GPS and mobile TV functionality, a microSD slot and 3MP camera that does stills and video. The device uses a Windows CE-based lightweight GUI.

The Anchorage has a 1GHz processor said to operate at 1/2 watt peak. It comes with WiFi, Bluetooth, GPS, MediaFLO and cellular connectivity, and a QWERTY keyboard.
It’s sad that these promising-looking devices will never be available, due to the fact that Qualcomm had them built just to display the capability of its Snapdragon platform. Strangely enough, it appears that both don’t actually use this platform, relying on existing chipsets instead।

Nec Flask Mobile Phone looks like a cigarette lighter

I’m not exactly sure what this thing can do as there isn’t much news about its specs yet। But this mobile phone from NEC features a touchscreen display, fuel-cell power, and a valve where you can charge the phone once the power runs out। No word on pricing or release date yet but I’d like to get my hands on one of those, just to see how it works. If that rectangular thing is supposed to be the touchscreen display, I can’t even begin to imagine how awkward using this would be. Where are the buttons? Navigation aside, I doubt that I’d actually use one because the NEC flask phones look too much like those cheap cigarette lighters you can buy off street vendors. Chances are, I’d end up confusing one for the other. Also, how exactly do you charge that thing? Butane gas?
